Addressing the dark side you mention is one of the things I’m looking to do with my power monitor project.

It doesn’t look as pretty as these pictures, but it is a working prototype. Currently monitors the power usage (and shares that data live on the Web) and the next version (that I’m building at the minute) will also be able to switch the power on and off.
